About
Joseph L. Anderson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Utah. He earned his Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from Brigham Young University–Idaho in 2008 and his Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Utah in 2009, where he also completed a Certificate in International Social Work with an emphasis on refugee and cross-cultural practice.
Joseph Anderson believes that at the core of adolescent behavioral struggles lies an overwhelmed nervous system trying to protect itself. Rather than viewing troubled behavior in isolation, Joseph examines how past trauma and subconscious beliefs shape a young person’s inner world, influencing their thoughts, bodily sensations, and self-worth. By helping students understand how their minds and bodies organize around self-defense, Joseph empowers them to realize that their brains are capable of profound healing through neuroplasticity.
Parents appreciate Joseph’s ability to pair high-level neurological expertise with warm, strategic empathy and a grounding sense of humor. He creates a non-judgmental space where teenagers feel genuinely understood rather than criticized. At Oxbow Academy, Joseph guides young men through the process of unburdening trauma, transforming negative self-perceptions, and developing healthy, resilient ways of relating to themselves and their families.
Joseph is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Utah with deep clinical experience spanning psychiatric inpatient care, residential substance use treatment, and executive leadership as an outpatient Clinical Director and Supervisor. He earned his Master of Social Work from the University of Utah and serves as a key driver of Oxbow’s trauma-informed care model.
A recognized authority in specialized trauma therapy, Joseph is the first certified Basic and Advanced Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) trainer in the state of Utah and holds the distinction of ART Master Certified Clinician. Having conducted over 1,000 ART sessions across basic and highly complex cases, he frequently presents on trauma recovery to clinical audiences ranging from local teams to national groups. Joseph is also trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) through Level 2 equivalency and is an active member of the International Society of Accelerated Resolution Therapy (IS-ART).
When he isn’t in the clinic, Joseph lives a grounded, hands-on life outside of work. He spends his free time tending to a backyard flock of 24 chickens, working in his garden, and tackling DIY home improvement projects. Bringing a playful energy and quick sense of humor to everything he does, Joseph is also known to surprise friends and family by casually executing a handstand on a chair.
Since completing his training in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) in 2021, Joseph has conducted over 600 ART sessions and is both a Basic and Advanced Certified ART Trainer. He has trained more than 400 clinicians nationwide and consulted individually with hundreds of ART practitioners to strengthen clinical skill and fidelity to the model. As the first ART Trainer in Utah, Joseph has also mentored most of the state’s current ART Trainers, contributing to the growth of a thriving regional training network.
In addition to his clinical and training work, Joseph brings over 8 years of experience in professional training, education and consultation. He is recognized for his engaging, practical teaching style and his ability to translate complex neurobiological concepts into clear, actionable skills for clinicians. His trainings emphasize experiential learning, clinical integrity, and confidence in applying ART with diverse client populations. Joseph’s professional mission is to equip clinicians with practical, evidence-based tools that restore peace and resilience—empowering clients to experience transformation through the body’s innate capacity to heal.
