About

David Zane was drawn to Oxbow Academy by the opportunity to support young men and families facing unusually complex challenges, working alongside a team committed to looking beyond behavior to understand what is truly happening underneath. His clinical style brings together warmth, humor, directness, and high expectations. David focuses on building relationships quickly, identifying patterns within complex clinical and family systems, and helping clients find hope without minimizing difficult realities. He excels in navigating complex cases, crisis situations, and intricate family dynamics, especially when traditional approaches are not working.

In his role as Clinical Director, David works to shape a treatment culture built around strong relationships, excellent clinical care, accountability, hope, and genuine belief in students. His work is guided by the core belief that people are remarkably capable of growth when provided with the right combination of relationship, opportunity, accountability, and hope. To meet the diverse needs of his clients, David utilizes a wide range of therapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR, Choice Theory, Exposure Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Family Systems, Attachment-Based Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, and Strengths-Based and Relationship-Centered Approaches.

David is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor holding credentials as an LCMHC, MBA, CRC, STPC, and NCMHCE. He possesses 19 years of experience in adolescent mental healthcare and over 20 years in behavioral health spanning individual, couples, family, and adolescent therapy, as well as residential treatment, crisis intervention, clinical supervision, and organizational leadership. He is a member of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA).

David earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Business from Brigham Young University (BYU), followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA), a Master of Science in Counseling, and a Master of Divinity (MDiv). His diverse background includes serving as CEO of a multi-clinician behavioral health organization, a U.S. Army Reserve Chaplain, and in regional leadership roles overseeing social service programs across the United States and Canada. David’s clinical specialties and certifications cover Trauma & PTSD, Problematic Sexual Behavior, Sexual Addiction & Compulsivity, OCD, Anxiety, Grief & Loss, Family Conflict, Couples & Relationship Issues, Attachment, Crisis Intervention, Adolescent & Family Therapy, Spirituality & Values-Based Counseling, and Clinical Leadership. Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of clinical care, leadership, education, and community service—from working directly with clients to developing clinicians, leading organizations, advising leadership teams, and speaking to audiences of thousands.

Family is at the center of David’s life, and his favorite time is spent with his wife, Jenny, and their children. Outside of his professional roles, he loves rock climbing, traveling, experiencing new cultures, being outdoors, staying active, learning, teaching, and seeking out new adventures. Endlessly curious, David enjoys diving into new ideas, projects, and hobbies. He deeply values faith, family, humor, meaningful conversations, and trying not to take himself—or life—too seriously.
