The Importance of Education

At Oxbow Academy, you don't have to worry about choosing therapy over academics. Here, academics and therapy go hand-in-hand. Your teen will be part of a small, nurturing learning community.

The school runs year-round. This scheduling will give your student the chance to catch up and keep up with their peers. They may even surpass their peers who are in traditional learning environments.

Advancement is possible because support is highly individualized. Your teen will not have to compete for attention among thirty or more students. Here, one teacher and one teacher's aides teach a class of four to twelve students. Your teen will experience individualized attention every day.

Classes are designed to support the way teens learn.

Oxbow Academy is a residential treatment facility where students get a high-quality education while they receive treatment. Oxbow Academy educates young men in grades 7–12 who are between 13 and 17 years old. The school is designed to meet each student's individual needs.

Student-teacher relationships are one of our highest priorities. That is why classes are kept small. Small classes allow each student's particular needs to be met by caring, qualified teachers in each classroom.

Academic and clinical staff work together to support therapeutic goals. This cooperative effort helps students be academically successful while they heal.

A blended learning model combines the best of technology and individualized instruction.

Oxbow Academy uses a competency-based learning model. This model means that students must pass all assignments, quizzes, and tests with 80% proficiency before moving on to the next concept.

Students at our school come and go at different times. They enter at different skill levels. To serve all of our students, Oxbow Academy classrooms uses a blended learning model. This model allows us to meet each student where they are.

Students begin a course at the beginning and move through the curriculum with teachers and student advisors' support. School is year-round. There are no semesters or summer vacations to determine when a student is finished learning. This schedule allows students to earn on average 1.5 years of credit and improve their GPA.

The individualized academic approach removes the pressure that students may feel about competing with other students. Moreover, student advisors monitor work to make sure that each student is progressing at an appropriate rate. Classes use a blended learning format. This format is a mix of digital curriculum and direct teacher instruction. This combination allows for students to progress at their own individualized pace.

Students not only learn, they learn to advocate for themselves.

There are times when students question why they are learning a particular subject or how that subject is being taught. At Oxbow Academy, these questions are encouraged.

By examining why a particular subject is taught, students develop a sense of personal investment in the subject matter. They begin to see success in school as preparation for future success in their careers and other areas of life.

When students take an active interest in how material is presented, then they begin to think critically about their personal learning style. Students are encouraged to identify their learning strengths and weaknesses, and to advocate for material to be presented in a manner that helps them learn.

Students not only learn, they learn to advocate for themselves.

    Knowing When to Seek Help

Many parents find it difficult to tell healthy curiosity about sex from a potentially dangerous situation. There are clinical evaluations that can help make that determination easier. One of these evaluations is the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST).

On the SAST, you will answer a series of simple yes or no questions about their teen. The answers are completely confidential. No information connects you to your assessment. After you complete the SAST, you will be taken to a new page that shows a score representing the level of risk.

After you get your score, you will have the chance to request a call from someone who can help answer your questions. You will only be contacted if you make a request. Whether you request a call or not, your information will remain confidential, and you will be under no obligation.
