Every Oxbow student begins his therapeutic journey by developing his personal mission statement. The mission statement becomes his own standard of accountability. It is a deeply personal affirmation of his individual worth. It is his first step in re-defining himself. His mission statement requires him to take personal responsibility for his life. As such, it must be absolutely original.
Students are required to memorize their mission statements. They must stand and recite it to their focus groups twice daily. The groups hold students accountable for any behaviors that are in conflict with their mission statements.
Besides reciting their mission statements to their focus groups, students are encouraged to repeat their mission statements to themselves, in the morning prior to getting up and at night before falling asleep. These quiet, transition times give students an opportunity for personal reflection when the distractions of the day are absent.
