Building a Path to Success: Oxbow Academy's Unique Transition Program

Our goal is to prepare students to return to society and live happy successful lives. To meet that goal, Oxbow has designed a specific program to help parents and students make that transition.

The work begins first at Oxbow as students work with their therapists and their groups to create a Relapse Prevention Plans. The plan is unique to each student. It is designed by the student with help from his therapist, family, peers and staff.

The Plan is built upon a 19-question survey that asks for information such as:

  • Where will you live and how will this minimize your risk to relapse?
  • How will you go about telling relatives, employers, etc. about why you were in a treatment center?
  • What family problems need to be worked out to help support your efforts to avoid relapsing?
  • How will doing this lower your risk of relapsing?

Students share their answers to the questionnaire in their group, individual and family therapy sessions.

What Makes Oxbow Academy the Best Choice for Your Son

While students are developing their plans, their therapists are working with their families to teach them how to they can incorporate the five governing principles at home. They work together on developing honest and open communication and how to spot relapse signs and address old behaviors.

Oxbow also provides a 90-day after-care program for students and their families to help facilitate a successful transition home. This program helps families review and practice what they have learned while their students have been in treatment. It also provides immediate feedback in the family home from a therapeutic team that already knows and understands the family’s unique history.

In the first month after their sons’ return home, families participate in two telephone therapy sessions with their students’ therapists. These sessions help support families in creating open communication and honesty. The students’ Relapse Prevention Plans are tailored to their individual needs to make them more effective.

In the second month after the students’ return, a primary clinician and another member of the Oxbow team visit their homes for two consecutive days (9 a.m. to Noon) of therapy sessions.

During the third month of after-care, families are provided with two telephone therapy sessions.

The aftercare program is intended to increase accountability for students and families and help both to build on family strengths. The program helps families identify and create their own heartbeats and mission statements while providing immediate feedback in the home from a therapeutic team that knows and understands the families’ issues.

Knowing When to Seek Help

Many parents find it difficult to tell healthy curiosity about sex from a potentially dangerous situation. There are clinical evaluations that can help make that determination easier. One of these evaluations is the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST).

On the SAST, you will answer a series of simple yes or no questions about their teen. The answers are completely confidential. No information connects you to your assessment. After you complete the SAST, you will be taken to a new page that shows a score representing the level of risk.

After you get your score, you will have the chance to request a call from someone who can help answer your questions. You will only be contacted if you make a request. Whether you request a call or not, your information will remain confidential, and you will be under no obligation.
